Albania has been on the verge of being discovered for so long that some travelers have started to wonder whether it ever will be. It has been. The question now is not whether Albania is worth visiting but whether you are visiting before or after the window closes on the version of it that most people are hoping to find: affordable, authentic, uncrowded, and genuinely surprising.

These albania travel tips first time visitors need are not particularly exotic. Albania is not a difficult country to navigate. But it is different enough from Western Europe in a few specific ways that a little preparation makes the experience significantly better.

Why Albania Right Now

Albania shares a border with Greece, sits a two-hour flight from most major European cities, has a coastline on both the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, contains a UNESCO heritage city in Berat that most Europeans have never heard of, has a mountain range in the north that produces some of the best hiking in the Balkans, and costs a fraction of what comparable destinations in Croatia, Montenegro, or Greece cost.

The people are extremely welcoming. The food is excellent and cheap. The beaches in the south are the kind that appear in photographs that people do not believe until they are sitting on them. The infrastructure has improved dramatically in the last decade and is continuing to improve. The country is safe. There is almost nothing in the standard European travel experience that Albania does not offer, and several things that are very difficult to find anywhere else on the continent.

It is a good time to go. Whether it will still be this way in five years is less certain.

Arriving at Tirana Airport: What to Expect

Tirana International Airport is officially named Nene Tereza International Airport and is located about 17 kilometres northwest of Tirana, near the town of Rinas. It is a modern, well-functioning airport that handles a growing volume of international traffic. Arriving here for the first time is not complicated, but there are a few specific things worth knowing.

Tirana airport arrival tips

Passport control is straightforward for EU citizens. Non-EU visitors should join the designated queue and allow extra time. Albania is not in the Schengen Area, so all international arrivals go through full passport control.

Baggage claim follows immediately after passport control. There is one main arrivals carousel area and it is clearly signed. Luggage typically arrives within 15 to 20 minutes of landing.

The critical moment for first-time visitors is what happens when you exit through the arrivals doors. Albania does not have Uber, Bolt, or any ride-hailing app. The taxis outside are unregulated, with no fixed prices and no app to verify the driver or vehicle. Unofficial drivers also solicit passengers inside the terminal before you reach the exits.

Walk past anyone who approaches you inside the terminal building. Unofficial drivers position themselves in the arrivals area before you reach the official taxi rank outside. They are easy to spot: they approach you, offer to carry your bags, and quote prices. Ignore them and proceed to the official rank or look for your pre-booked driver's name sign.

The best solution for tirana airport arrival tips is the simplest one: arrange your transfer before you fly. Tirana Airport Shuttle (tiranaairportshuttle.com) operates pre-booked private transfers from the airport with a fixed price, Meet and Greet in arrivals, and real-time flight tracking. Your driver is waiting with your name on a sign when you come through customs. You do not interact with the taxi rank at all.

For a full breakdown of every transport option from the airport, see our guide on how to get from Tirana Airport to the city center.

Getting Around Albania: Visiting Albania Tips Transportation

Understanding visiting albania tips transportation before you arrive saves significant confusion on the ground. Albania's transport network is functional but different from what most Western European visitors expect.

No Uber or Bolt

Albania has no international ride-hailing apps. This is the single most important transport fact for first-time visitors to internalize before arrival. Uber does not operate here. Bolt does not operate here. Local alternatives exist in Tirana but are limited and not consistently reliable. See our full guide on Uber alternatives in Albania for the current situation.

Private transfers

For airport arrivals and longer journeys between destinations, a pre-booked private transfer is the most reliable and comfortable option. This is the Uber equivalent for Albania: you book in advance, confirm a fixed price, and a professional driver takes you door to door. Tirana Airport Shuttle covers the airport and all major destinations across the country. Book online or via WhatsApp.

Furgons (intercity minibuses)

Furgons are the backbone of intercity transport in Albania for locals. They are shared minibuses that run fixed routes between cities and towns, departing when full rather than on a set timetable. Furgons are very cheap, widely used, and a genuine way to travel the country as Albanians do. They depart from specific informal stands in each city rather than from central bus stations. They are an excellent option once you are in the country and comfortable with some improvisation.

Intercity buses

Longer intercity routes are served by buses from the main bus stations in Tirana and other cities. Services to Sarande, Shkoder, and other major towns run daily. Journey times are long and schedules are not always published reliably online, but the buses are inexpensive and functional.

Rental cars

Renting a car is the right choice for travelers who want maximum flexibility to move independently between multiple destinations, particularly along the Albanian Riviera or into the northern mountains. Albanian roads have improved significantly but vary in quality: the main expressways are modern and fast; mountain roads require more care. Driving in Tirana city center is not recommended for first-time visitors.

Taxis within cities

Within Albanian cities, taxis are widely available and reasonable. In Tirana, always agree on the fare before getting in. Most short city trips cost between 300 and 600 lek. Hotel and restaurant staff are generally happy to call a reliable taxi for you, which is safer than hailing one on the street as an obviously unfamiliar visitor.

Money and Payments in Albania

Albania uses the Albanian lek (ALL). The exchange rate in 2026 is approximately 100 lek to 1 euro, which makes mental arithmetic straightforward: divide any lek price by 100 to get the approximate euro equivalent.

Euros are accepted at most hotels, tourist restaurants, and larger businesses in the south. Paying in lek is almost always better value. ATMs are widely available in cities and tourist areas. There is an ATM at Tirana Airport in the arrivals area.

Carry cash

Many smaller restaurants, local markets, guesthouses in rural areas, and furgon drivers prefer or require cash. Do not rely entirely on card payment outside major hotels and tourist businesses.

Cards for big payments

Hotels, airport transfers paid to the driver, and established restaurants in cities and tourist areas accept cards. Visa and Mastercard work reliably. American Express is less widely accepted.

Safety in Albania

Albania is safe. This is not a promotional claim. It is the consistent experience of the overwhelming majority of international visitors and is reflected in the country's actual crime statistics. Violent crime against tourists is rare. Albania has a strong cultural tradition of hospitality and protection of guests.

The areas where first-time visitors need to exercise ordinary caution are:

Taxis: Price exploitation at the airport and in tourist areas. Agree on the fare before getting in and use the official taxi rank or pre-booked services. See our guide to avoiding taxi scams at Tirana Airport.

Driving: Albanian drivers are assertive and the rules of the road are interpreted flexibly. Driving at night in rural areas requires care.

Mountain areas: Hiking in the Albanian Alps requires preparation. Weather changes quickly and mobile coverage is limited in remote areas.

Standard urban awareness: The same awareness appropriate in any Southern European city applies in Tirana. Keep valuables secure in crowded areas.

Albania as a solo travel destination: Albania is considered safe for solo travelers of all genders. Female solo travelers report predominantly positive experiences. The main practical adjustment is the transport situation: in the absence of ride-hailing apps, pre-booking transfers and arranging taxis through accommodation is more reliable than street-hailing, particularly at night.

Where to Go: Albania First Time Visitor Guide

This albania first time visitor guide assumes a trip of seven to fourteen days. Here is how to think about the main areas.

Tirana (1 to 2 days)

Start in Tirana. The capital is more interesting than most guidebooks suggest and makes a good acclimatisation point. Skanderbeg Square, the Blloku district, the National History Museum, the New Bazaar, and a cable car ride to Mount Dajti can fill two days comfortably. The city is walkable, the food is excellent, and it is the logical base before heading anywhere else.

The Albanian Riviera (4 to 7 days)

The Riviera is the primary draw for most first-time visitors and deserves the majority of your time. Sarande and Ksamil in the south are the most visually dramatic. Dhermi and Himare in the middle section are quieter and also beautiful. Vlore is the gateway to the south and worth a stop. Most visitors choose one base and make day trips. See our full Albanian Riviera guide for details.

Berat (1 day)

The UNESCO heritage city of Berat, about two hours from Tirana Airport, is the most impressive cultural destination in Albania and one of the best-preserved Ottoman towns in the Balkans. A day trip from Tirana or a night stop en route to the Riviera is strongly recommended.

Shkoder and the Albanian Alps (2 to 4 days)

For travelers with an appetite for serious walking and mountain scenery, the Albanian Alps around Theth and Valbona are extraordinary. The Peaks of the Balkans multi-day trail is one of the best long-distance walks in Europe. This area requires more planning and a different mindset from the beach holiday in the south, but the landscape is exceptional.

Essential Practical Tips for First-Time Visitors

Language

Albanian is the official language and is completely unlike any other European language. Do not attempt to learn phrases assuming they will resemble Italian, Greek, or Slavic languages. They will not. English is widely spoken in Tirana, along the Riviera, and among younger Albanians everywhere. Italian is also widely understood, particularly in western Albania. You will manage with English in virtually all tourist situations.

SIM cards and mobile connectivity

Local SIM cards are cheap and widely available at the airport and in the city. Data is inexpensive. Buying a local SIM on arrival is strongly recommended: it gives you access to Google Maps, which is essential for navigation, and allows you to communicate via WhatsApp, which is how most Albanians and service providers prefer to communicate.

Water

Tap water in Tirana and major cities is treated but is not reliably safe to drink throughout the country. Bottled water is inexpensive and universally available. Use bottled water for drinking and teeth brushing, particularly outside major hotels.

Electricity

Albania uses the standard European two-pin plug (Type C/F) at 230V. UK and US visitors need adapters. Power cuts in rural areas and during summer peak demand in some areas are possible; keeping devices charged when you have the opportunity is sensible.

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated but not universally expected. In restaurants, rounding up the bill or leaving 10 percent is appropriate in tourist areas. For private transfer drivers who have been helpful or gone above the basic service, a tip is a kind gesture. There is no social pressure around tipping in the way there is in some other countries.

Photography

Albania is spectacularly photogenic. Ask before photographing people, particularly in rural areas and in mosques and churches. Most Albanians are happy to be photographed but appreciate being asked. Military installations and some border areas have restrictions on photography.

Religion and culture

Albania is a secular state with a Muslim majority and significant Orthodox and Catholic minorities. Religious coexistence is a genuine feature of Albanian culture rather than a diplomatic talking point. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites. The concept of besa, a code of honor that includes the obligation to welcome and protect guests, shapes Albanian hospitality in ways that are immediately apparent to visitors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Albania safe for first-time visitors?

Yes. Albania has a low violent crime rate and is considered a safe destination for international tourists. The main practical caution for first arrivals is the unregulated taxi situation at Tirana Airport. Pre-booking a private transfer eliminates this risk entirely.

What currency does Albania use?

Albania uses the Albanian lek (ALL). The approximate rate is 100 lek to 1 euro. Euros are accepted in tourist areas but lek gives better value. ATMs are available at the airport and throughout the country.

Do I need a visa for Albania?

Citizens of EU countries, the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and many other countries can visit Albania for up to 90 days without a visa. Albania is not in the Schengen Area. Check the specific requirements for your passport before travel.

How do I get around Albania without Uber?

For airport arrivals and longer routes, use a pre-booked private transfer. For travel between cities once in the country, furgons (shared minibuses) are the most commonly used option by both locals and budget travelers. Rental cars offer maximum flexibility for multi-destination trips. See our guide on getting around Albania without Uber.

What is the best time to visit Albania for the first time?

June and September offer the best combination of warm sea, reduced crowds, and good weather. July and August are the most popular months but the busiest and hottest. Spring is good for cultural travel and walking but the Riviera is quieter. Albania is worth visiting any time between May and October for a first trip.

How long do I need for a first trip to Albania?

Seven to ten days is enough for a satisfying first trip that combines Tirana, the Albanian Riviera, and one or two additional destinations. Fourteen days allows you to include the Albanian Alps or more of the interior. Albania rewards slower travel; rushing between destinations misses most of what makes it interesting.

What should I not miss on a first trip to Albania?

Do not miss Berat, the City of a Thousand Windows. Do not miss Ksamil or Sarande on the southern Riviera. Do not miss an evening in Tirana's Blloku district. And do not miss the Llogara Pass if you are driving south: the view from the summit over the Ionian Sea is one of the most spectacular moments in any Albanian trip.

Tirana Airport to Neuron Lake Leskovik, Albania | Private Transfer

In 2025, Albania made geological history. Deep beneath the limestone mountains of Leskovik in southeastern Albania, a Czech research team confirmed the existence of Lake Neuron, the world’s largest known underground thermal lake, lying 127 metres below the surface. Since the discovery made international headlines, travellers, researchers, photographers, and explorers have been asking the same question: how do you actually get there?

The answer begins at Tirana International Airport. A private transfer takes you directly south into the Albanian highlands, either through Korçë in the east or through Përmet in the southwest, with a professional driver, a fixed price, and no connections to figure out after a long flight.

What Is Neuron Lake?

Lake Neuron is the world’s largest known underground thermal lake, sitting 127 metres beneath the surface near the town of Leskovik in southeastern Albania. It measures 138 metres in length and 42 metres in width, with a perimeter of 345 metres, and holds approximately 8,335 cubic metres of thermal water, the equivalent of more than three and a half Olympic-sized swimming pools, hidden entirely underground.

The discovery traces back to 2021, when Czech speleologist Marek Audy and his team spotted a towering column of steam rising from a mountain gorge in the Vromoneri Valley on the Albanian side of the border with Greece. Descending into a 100-metre abyss they named “Atmos”, they found a vast cave system filled with thermal springs. At the bottom: a lake no one knew existed.

The thermal springs emerge near the village of Kuqes in Leskovik municipality, in the Sarandaporos Valley at 430 metres above sea level. Water temperatures at the surface range from 40 to 50°C and carry sulfur compounds. Scientists say the region may hold even more, the Albania-Greece border area was largely off-limits for decades, leaving vast stretches of cave systems unstudied. Neuron Lake may be only the beginning.

DEPTH

LENGTH

WIDTH

VOLUME

127 m

138 m

42 m

8,335 m³

Underground

End to end

At widest

Thermal water

Getting from Tirana Airport to Leskovik | Two Routes

There is no direct bus from Tirana Airport to Leskovik, and the region is not served by any shared shuttle service. A private transfer is the only practical option for travellers arriving at the airport with luggage and a specific destination in the Vromoneri Valley. From Tirana International Airport, there are two main routes south to Leskovik. We operate both.

Route via Korçë

The eastern route heads south from the airport, joins the highway through Elbasan, and climbs into the highlands toward Korçë, one of Albania’s most distinctive cities, known for its Ottoman-era architecture, cobblestone bazaar, and proximity to Lake Ohrid. From Korçë the road continues south into the Leskovik municipality through a succession of high-altitude valleys. Total drive time is approximately 4 to 4.5 hours covering around 270–300 km

Route via Përmet

The western highland route heads south from Tirana through Fier and turns inland through the Vjosa Valley toward Përmet, a small town known for its wild roses, thermal baths, and position at the heart of the Vjosa River corridor. From Përmet, the road climbs northeast through the Sarandaporos Valley directly into the Leskovik municipality, arriving close to the Vromoneri thermal spring area. This route is slightly more scenic and Përmet makes an excellent base or stopover. Drive time is similar, approximately 4 to 4.5 hours.

Journey Details at a Glance

Detail

Info

Departure

Tirana International Airport (TIA) — Arrivals Hall, meet & greet

Destination

Leskovik / Vromoneri Valley, Leskovik Municipality

Route options

Via Korçë (eastern highlands) or via Përmet (Vjosa Valley)

Distance

Approx. 270–300 km depending on route

Drive time

Approx. 4 to 4.5 hours

Price

Fixed at the time of booking — no adjustments on arrival

Leskovik Beyond the Lake

Neuron Lake has placed Leskovik on the international map, but the region has been quietly extraordinary long before 2025. The Sarandaporos Valley runs through one of Albania’s most pristine natural corridors, remote gorges, thermal springs accessible from the surface via the Leskovik-Kuqes rural road, and highland landscapes that very few international visitors have walked through

A few kilometres from the cave site, the Max Mavrud Winery, a family estate run by the Fejzulla family, has revived Leskovik’s long-forgotten winemaking tradition. Inspired directly by the Neuron Lake discovery, they released a wine bearing the lake’s name: a bold red from 100% Mavrud grapes grown at 750–780 metres on calcareous limestone soils.

Visitors travelling via Përmet can stop at Bënja Thermal Pools, natural hot spring pools along the Lengarica River Canyon, and the Vjosa National Park for rafting. Those arriving via Korçë will find the city rewards an early arrival or overnight stay, with its National Museum of Medieval Art and old Bazaar neighbourhood.

Shared Shuttle from Tirana Airport to Sarande — €40 Per Person

What’s Included

Every seat on our shared shuttle from Tirana Airport to Sarande includes:

Direct, non-stop ride with no route changes

Air-conditioned, modern minibus or van

Luggage allowance: 1 large suitcase + 1 carry-on per person

English-speaking driver

Instant booking confirmation by email

The Route — Tirana Airport to Sarande

The journey covers approximately 260–280 km and takes around 3.5 to 4 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. The most common route follows the Levan–Tepelena–Gjirokastra highway — the fastest and most direct corridor to the Albanian south.

As you leave the Tirana–Durres region behind and push south, the landscape shifts dramatically. The highway climbs through mountain passes, cuts across the Vjosa river valley, and eventually opens up to the dramatic scenery of southern Albania before descending toward the coast. By the time Sarande’s bay comes into view, it is hard to believe you were at an airport just a few hours ago.

Why Choose a Shared Shuttle Over Other Options?

Travelers flying into Tirana and heading south to Sarande have a few options — but the shared shuttle sits in the sweet spot for most visitors.

vs. Private Transfer: A private transfer on this route costs €150–€260+. That is perfectly reasonable if you are a group of four or more splitting the cost. For solo travelers and couples, the shared shuttle at €40 per person is dramatically cheaper with no meaningful difference in journey time.

vs. Public Bus: There is no direct public bus from Tirana Airport to Sarande. The public bus option requires traveling to North and South Bus Terminal Tirana, catching a furgon or bus to Sarande directly or to Himare or Gjirokaster and then connecting onward to Sarande — a process that can take 6+ hours and becomes impractical for anyone arriving in the afternoon. The last connection from North and South Bus Terminal Tirana to Sarande departs at around 22:00.

vs. Taxi: axis from TIA to Sarande are a perfectly valid option, especially for groups or late-night arrivals when flexibility matters most. The main advantage of a shared shuttle is simply the fixed, upfront price — so you know exactly what you’re paying before you land.

Sarande — Albania’s Ionian Gem

If you are making this journey for the first time, you are in for a genuine surprise. Sarande sits on an open bay of the Ionian Sea with over 300 sunny days per year, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and a lively promenade that comes alive each evening for the traditional Albanian xhiro — a beloved ritual of evening walks, seafood dinners, and local wine.

The city is also one of the best bases in the Balkans for day trips. Within an hour’s reach you’ll find Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site of remarkable depth; Ksamil, a cluster of white-sand islet beaches sometimes called the Maldives of Europe; Syri i Kaltër (Blue Eye), a hypnotic freshwater spring of impossible depth and color; and Gjirokastër, the UNESCO-listed Ottoman hilltop city. Lekuresi Castle, perched on a hill above Sarande with panoramic views across to Corfu, is worth a sunset visit on its own.

The Albanian Riviera is still relatively undiscovered by mass tourism — which means genuinely affordable food, uncrowded beaches, and the kind of authentic hospitality that has all but disappeared from neighboring Mediterranean coasts.

How to Book

This 7 day Albania itinerary takes you through the best of southern Albania — from the colourful capital Tirana and the Ottoman hilltop city of Berat, south through the Llogara Pass and down the Albanian Riviera to the Ionian coast at Saranda. It is a route that moves through wildly different landscapes within a small country, which is exactly what makes Albania such a rewarding destination.

Albania has been one of Europe’s best-kept travel secrets for years. That is changing fast. If you have been thinking about going, this is the year to do it before the Riviera starts to feel like the Croatian coast did a decade ago. Seven days is the perfect amount of time to do the south justice without rushing.

This guide is written for travellers flying into Tirana International Airport (TIA/Rinas). Each day follows a logical geographic flow south, and every transfer between destinations can be pre-booked as a private door-to-door service — no buses, no waiting, no connections.

Here is how to spend 7 days in Albania.

Day 1 — Tirana: Arrival and First Impressions

Your 7 day Albania itinerary starts in Tirana, and the city will probably surprise you. Most people arrive expecting a grey post-communist capital and find instead a genuinely lively, colourful, and caffeinated city that has reinvented itself with remarkable speed over the past two decades.

From Tirana Airport, the fastest way into the city centre is a private airport transfer — the drive takes about 25 to 35 minutes depending on traffic, and your driver meets you at arrivals. Useful if you land in the evening and want to get straight to your hotel without negotiating a taxi fare.

Day 1 is for settling in and getting a feel for the city. Walk to Skanderbeg Square — the vast central plaza anchored by the mounted statue of Albania’s national hero — and take in the mix of Ottoman mosques, Italian fascist-era architecture, and Soviet-style government buildings that somehow coexist in one city block. Then follow the main boulevard south into Blloku, the former communist elite district that is now Tirana’s most fashionable neighbourhood. This is where you eat dinner. The food scene here is genuinely good — try the traditional tavë kosi (baked lamb with yogurt and eggs) at least once during your week.

Tirana rewards wandering. The streets around the Grand Park and the artificial lake are quieter and pleasant in the late afternoon. The city has a huge number of street murals, particularly around the university district. If you arrive with enough energy, the Bunk’Art 2 museum in the city centre — a decommissioned communist nuclear bunker turned museum — is one of the most unusual cultural experiences in the Balkans and takes about an hour.

Day 2 — Tirana and Kruja

Spend the morning finishing Tirana before leaving the capital behind on Day 3. The National History Museum on Skanderbeg Square is worth two hours of your time — it covers Albanian history from the Illyrian period through the Ottoman centuries and the Hoxha dictatorship, and its enormous socialist-realist mosaic facade is one of the great pieces of public art in the region, whatever you think of the politics it once served.

In the afternoon, take a half-day trip to Kruja, 35 km north of Tirana. Kruja is where Gjergj Kastrioti — better known as Skanderbeg — successfully held off Ottoman expansion for 25 years in the 15th century, and the Albanians have never forgotten it. The castle on the hilltop contains the excellent Skanderbeg Museum and an Ethnographic Museum housed in a beautifully restored Ottoman mansion. Below the castle, the old bazaar street is one of the best in Albania for handmade crafts, traditional textiles, and copper work. It has been a market for 500 years and still feels like one.

Return to Tirana for the evening. Your last night in the capital — make the most of the restaurant and bar scene in Blloku, because once you head south tomorrow, the pace shifts considerably.

Day 3 — Tirana to Berat: The City of a Thousand Windows

Day 3 is a transition day, and it is a good one. Check out of your Tirana hotel in the morning and head south toward Berat, roughly 120 km away and about 1.5 to 2 hours by private transfer. The road passes through agricultural lowlands and the Tomorri mountain range starts to fill the horizon as you approach.

Berat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visually distinctive cities in the Balkans. The name “City of a Thousand Windows” refers to the Ottoman houses stacked up the hillside, whose large, closely spaced windows reflect off each other in the afternoon light. It is the kind of place that looks like a painting from certain angles, and photographers tend to lose hours here without noticing.

The first thing to do when you arrive is walk up to Berat Castle — not just to see the fortifications but because the castle is a living neighbourhood. People have homes here. There are restaurants, a small church, chickens in courtyards. The Onufri Museum inside the castle houses 16th-century Byzantine icons painted by the Albanian master Onufri, whose distinctive red pigment — made from a local plant — is immediately recognisable and unlike anything else from the period.

Back down in the lower town, the Mangalem quarter on the western bank of the Osumi River is the Ottoman residential district, with narrow stone streets, a 17th-century mosque, and the kind of café terraces that make it impossible to keep to any itinerary. Cross the old stone bridge to the Gorica quarter on the eastern bank for the best views back toward Mangalem and the castle above it.

Stay the night in Berat. Do not do it as a day trip from Tirana — the atmosphere in the evening after the day visitors have left is completely different, and several of the best guesthouses are right inside the historic quarters.

Day 4 — Berat to Apollonia, Vlora, and the Llogara Pass

Day 4 is the day the scenery changes completely. Leave Berat in the morning and make your first stop at Apollonia, about 60 km southwest and an hour’s drive. Most travellers skip it — that is their loss. Founded by Greek colonists in the 7th century BC, it was once one of the most important cities in the ancient world. Julius Caesar used it as a military base, and the young Octavian — later Augustus — studied here before sailing back to Rome to claim power after Caesar’s assassination. The ruins are substantial: a colonnaded gateway, an ancient council chamber, a 2nd-century temple, and a monastery built directly into the ancient structures. Allow 1.5 hours. Entrance is around €5 per person.

From Apollonia, continue to Vlora for lunch on the waterfront — then south toward the Llogara Pass. The road climbs from sea level to 1,027 metres through pine forest, with the Ionian Sea appearing below you as you near the summit. Stop at the top. The view over the entire southern coastline is the kind of thing you will remember for years. The descent brings you down to the first turquoise coves of the Albanian Riviera and your base for the night in Dhermi or Himara.

Day 5 — The Albanian Riviera: Beaches, Canyons, and Seafood

Day 5 has no agenda. This is your Riviera day — the central beach section of any southern 7 day Albania itinerary — and the only plan you need is to slow down.

The Albanian Riviera has been called the last unspoiled Mediterranean coastline, which is slightly hyperbolic but not entirely wrong. The water is exceptional — visibility of 10 to 15 metres in the clearer bays — and the beaches alternate between white sand, white pebble, and the occasional dramatic cliff cove. Compared to the Greek or Croatian coast at the same latitude, it is still significantly less crowded and considerably cheaper.

If you are based in Dhermi, the main beach is beautiful and a short walk from the village. The more adventurous option is Gjipe Beach, accessible via a 20-minute hike through a narrow limestone canyon that opens suddenly onto a secluded cove. The canyon walk alone — cool, shaded, with a small stream running through it — is worth doing even if you spend five minutes at the beach.

If you are based in Himara, Livadhi Beach is the main stretch — longer and sandier than Dhermi, with more infrastructure. In the late afternoon, walk up to Himara Old Town above the modern village — a partially ruined hilltop settlement with old stone houses, a Byzantine church, and views along the coast that few tourists bother to make the climb for.

Spend the evening at one of the waterfront seafood restaurants in Himara. Fresh octopus grilled over charcoal, local white wine, and a view of the Ionian Sea at sunset. This is the best possible version of a Tuesday in May.

Day 6 — Saranda: Butrint and Ksamil

Day 6 takes you to the southern end of the Riviera and into Saranda, the main city of Albania’s Ionian coast. The drive from Himara to Saranda is about 70 km and takes roughly 1.5 hours — the road passes through Borsh and Qeparo, quieter and less visited sections of the Riviera that are worth slowing down for if time allows.

Before checking into your Saranda accommodation, stop at Butrint, 18 km south of the city. Butrint is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in the Mediterranean — a city occupied continuously from the 7th century BC through the Byzantine era, with Greek, Roman, and Venetian remains layered on top of each other in a forest setting beside a lagoon. It does not feel like a ruin in the conventional sense; it feels like a place where time has simply stacked up. Allow two hours minimum.

After Butrint, head to Ksamil, 14 km south of Saranda. This is the most photographed destination in Albania, and it earns it — the small resort village sits on a turquoise lagoon with three uninhabited islands just offshore that create a sheltered bay of improbably clear water. The beaches are small and get busy in midsummer, but in May, June, or September you can find a spot without difficulty. The water colour is the kind of thing that makes people question whether their camera is lying to them.

Return to Saranda for the evening. The city has a long palm-lined promenade facing the bay, with the lights of Corfu visible across the water on a clear night. The restaurant scene is good — fresh fish, grilled meat, and the local raki if you are that way inclined. Saranda is an easy city to enjoy without effort.

Day 7 — Blue Eye, Lëkurësi Castle, and Departure

Your last morning of this 7 day Albania itinerary belongs to two of Saranda’s most memorable experiences, both within easy reach of the city.

Start early at the Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër), a natural spring 25 km northeast of Saranda. Water rises from an unknown depth through a circular opening in the rock, creating a perfectly ringed pool of electric blue and turquoise water surrounded by forest. The effect is completely natural and genuinely surreal — the colour has a depth and intensity that photographs struggle to capture. The water is a constant 10°C, which makes swimming in it memorable in a specific way. The short walk through the forest from the car park to the spring is lovely in the morning before the tour groups arrive.

Back in Saranda, drive up to Lëkurësi Castle on the hill above the city. The Ottoman fortification dates to the 16th century and is not large, but the views from its walls — over Saranda, the bay, and the Greek island of Corfu just 14 km across the water — are among the best in southern Albania. There is a café inside the castle walls. Have a final Albanian coffee here. Watch the ferries crossing to Corfu. Decide whether seven days was enough.

Getting Back to Tirana Airport

If you are flying out of Tirana, the return transfer from Saranda to Tirana Airport takes 4 to 5 hours depending on the route. For afternoon or evening flights, a morning departure from Saranda works well. For early flights, consider departing the night before.

Alternatively, if your trip continues into Greece, the Saranda–Corfu ferry takes around 35 minutes and operates multiple times daily in season — check current schedules at Ionian Cruises. A natural extension of any southern Albania itinerary.

Practical Information for Your 7 Day Albania Itinerary

When to Go

The best months for a 7 day Albania itinerary in the south are May, June, and September. The weather is warm, the beaches are swimmable, and the tourist crowds — particularly on the Riviera — are manageable. July and August are peak season: hot, crowded on the coast, and noticeably more expensive. April is fine for Tirana and Berat but cooler on the coast. October is increasingly popular and still mild.

Getting Around

Private transfers are the most practical way to move between the destinations in this itinerary. The Tirana–Berat–Riviera–Saranda route is not well served by public transport, and the Llogara Pass section in particular is a road you want a confident, experienced driver on. Pre-booking your transfers also means you can travel on your own schedule — no waiting for morning buses or losing half a day at a junction town. Book all legs of your journey here.

Budget

Albania is one of the most affordable destinations in Europe. A comfortable mid-range traveller — good guesthouses, restaurant meals, private transfers — can expect to spend €80 to €120 per day. Budget travellers can do it for considerably less. Even the Albanian Riviera in summer is significantly cheaper than comparable destinations in Greece or Croatia. The currency is the Albanian Lek (ALL); euros are accepted in tourist areas but you will get better rates paying in Lek.

Visa and Entry

EU, UK, US, Australian, and most other Western passport holders can enter Albania without a visa for stays up to 90 days. Check the Albanian e-Visa portal for current entry requirements for your nationality before travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 7 days enough to see Albania?

Seven days is the ideal length for a first visit to southern Albania. You can cover Tirana, Berat, the Albanian Riviera, and Saranda without feeling rushed. If you have 10 days, you can add Shkodra and the Accursed Mountains in the north, or extend into Ohrid, North Macedonia.

How do I get from place to place on a 7 day Albania itinerary without a car?

Private transfers cover every leg of this itinerary. Tirana to Berat, Berat to Vlora, Vlora to the Riviera, and through to Saranda — all can be pre-booked door-to-door. Book your Albania transfers here.

Is southern Albania safe for tourists?

Yes. Southern Albania — including Tirana, Berat, the Riviera, and Saranda — is safe for tourists. Petty crime exists as in any destination, but violent crime targeting tourists is rare. Albania has changed dramatically in the past decade. Check your government’s official travel advice — the UK Foreign Office and most equivalent agencies rate Albania as a standard tourist destination.

What is the best base for the Albanian Riviera?

Himara offers the best combination of beach access, restaurants, and a genuine local atmosphere. Dhermi is more exclusively beach-focused and quieter in the evenings. Both work well for a Riviera night on this 7 day Albania itinerary.

Can I extend this 7 day Albania itinerary to include Ohrid?

Yes — and it is a natural extension. From Saranda, a private transfer to Ohrid in North Macedonia takes around 3 to 4 hours via the eastern route. Ohrid is one of the most beautiful lake cities in Europe and pairs perfectly with southern Albania. Add 2 to 3 days if you can.

Ready to Start Planning?

Tirana Airport Shuttle operates private transfers and tours for every leg of this 7 day Albania itinerary — from your arrival at Tirana Airport on Day 1 to your return transfer from Saranda on Day 7. All vehicles are modern and air-conditioned, all drivers are English-speaking and experienced on these routes, and all bookings include real-time flight monitoring and free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure.

A Tirana Airport to Ohrid transfer is the fastest, most convenient way to travel between Albania and one of the most beautiful destinations in the Balkans. Ohrid — a UNESCO World Heritage city on the shores of Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia — sits just 150 km east of Tirana, making it an easy and popular cross-border journey for travellers flying into Tirana International Airport (TIA/Rinas).

Tirana Airport Shuttle provides private, door-to-door transfers from Tirana Airport directly to Ohrid, handling all the logistics so you don’t have to think about bus schedules, border crossings, or changing vehicles along the way. Your driver meets you at arrivals and takes you straight to your hotel or accommodation in Ohrid.

Tirana Airport to Ohrid Transfer – Prices

How Long Does the Tirana Airport to Ohrid Transfer Take?

The distance from Tirana Airport to Ohrid is approximately 150 km. Under normal conditions, the journey takes around 2.5 to 3.5 hours, depending on traffic and border wait times at the Qafë Thanë crossing (Albania–North Macedonia). This border crossing is generally straightforward for EU and most international passport holders, and your driver is experienced with the process.

The Route: Tirana to Ohrid via Qafë Thanë

The standard route for a Tirana Airport to Ohrid transfer heads east from Tirana through Elbasan, then climbs into the mountains toward the Qafë Thanë border crossing at around 1,270 metres. The mountain scenery along this section is striking — forested ridges, river valleys, and traditional Albanian villages. After crossing into North Macedonia, the road descends toward Struga on the northern shore of Lake Ohrid, with the lake coming into view before you enter the city.

It’s a genuinely scenic drive, and many travellers are surprised at how easy and pleasant the journey is compared to their expectations of a cross-border transfer.

Why Choose a Private Transfer from Tirana Airport to Ohrid?

There is no direct bus from Tirana Airport to Ohrid. The public transport option involves taking a taxi or shuttle to Tirana city centre, finding the right bus station, taking a bus to the border, crossing on foot, and then finding onward transport to Ohrid — a journey that can take 6 or more hours with connections. A private Tirana Airport to Ohrid transfer eliminates all of that. You leave the arrivals hall and arrive at your Ohrid hotel in one smooth ride.

What’s Included in the Transfer

Private, door-to-door service from Tirana Airport to Ohrid — no shared stops, no detours

Professional English-speaking driver with cross-border transfer experience

Real-time flight monitoring — delays handled at no extra charge

Modern, air-conditioned vehicles for all group sizes

Complimentary bottled water on board

Wi-Fi on board

Assistance at the border crossing if needed

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure

Child seats available on request

About Ohrid: Why It’s Worth the Journey

Ohrid is one of the oldest human settlements in Europe and one of North Macedonia’s greatest treasures. The city sits on the southwestern shore of Lake Ohrid, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for both its natural and cultural significance. The lake is one of the oldest and deepest in the world, and its clarity is extraordinary — visibility can reach 22 metres.

The old town itself is a maze of cobblestone streets, Ottoman-era houses, and Byzantine churches — over 365 of them, reportedly one for every day of the year. Key highlights include:

Church of Saint John at Kaneo – the most photographed spot in North Macedonia, perched on a cliff above the lake

Ohrid Fortress (Samuel’s Fortress) – a medieval castle with panoramic views over the lake and city

Ancient Theatre of Ohrid – a Hellenistic open-air theatre still used for performances today

Plaošnik and Saint Clement’s Basilica – an important early Christian site and active monastery

Ohrid Lake beaches – clear, calm freshwater swimming, particularly at Lagadin and Gradište

Struga – a small town at the northern end of the lake, 15 minutes from Ohrid, known for its river, fish restaurants, and relaxed atmosphere

Ohrid is also well connected for onward travel. From Ohrid you can continue to Skopje (3 hours by road), or cross back into Albania toward Pogradec and Lake Ohrid’s Albanian shore. We can arrange onward transfers from Ohrid to any destination in the region.

Combining Tirana Airport to Ohrid with Other Destinations

Many travellers pair an Ohrid visit with other stops in the region. Our drivers can arrange a multi-destination itinerary on request. Popular combinations include:

Tirana Airport → Ohrid → Skopje (and airport drop-off at SKP)

Tirana Airport → Pogradec → Ohrid

Tirana Airport → Ohrid → return to TIA
